Apply for a school place

We deal with admissions for places at primary, infant, junior and secondary schools.

Applying for primary, infant and junior school places

If your child was born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 you should have applied for their infant or primary school place by 15 January 2017. They will be eligible to start school in September 2017. The closing date has now passed but you can still make a late primary or infant school application (opens in a new window) until 31 August 2017. After this date you should use the primary in-year facility in our changing schools section to make your application.

If your child was born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 and is in their last year at infant school you should have applied for their junior place by 15 January 2017. The closing date has now passed but you can still make a late junior school application (opens in a new window) until Thursday 31 August 2017. After this date you should use the primary in-year facility in our changing schools section to make your application.

If your child attends a school outside of Derbyshire which operates a different pattern of education and they are due to transfer primary school phase in September 2017 this information will also apply to you. You should also have applied for their school place by 15 January 2017. The closing date has now passed but you can still make a late junior school late application (opens in a new window) until Thursday 31 August 2017. After this date you should use the primary in-year facility in our changing schools section to make your application.

The application process is quick and easy and you can also find information about how to choose a school and apply for a place in our parent's guide to primary admissions.

You'll get your offer on Tuesday 18 April 2017 and if you're unhappy with the decision you can make an appeal.

Changing schools

Your child may need to move schools at a time other than when they start infant, junior, primary or secondary school. This may be because you're moving address.

What you'll need to apply for an 'in-year' admission to a school

We've produced a guide to help you understand the in-year admission process and the sort of things you'll need to consider as well as what information we will need from you.

You can find the guide attached to this page and you should read this before applying.

Who to apply

When applying for a school place you should contact the council where the school is located. You can find contact details for other councils on the Directgov website (opens in a new window).

If you want to apply for a place at a school in Derbyshire you can do this online. There is useful guidance attached to this page to help you through the process. We can't accept applications earlier than one term in advance of when the place is required.

Applications for places in early year settings, nursery schools and post 16 provision should be made direct to the establishment.

Apply online to change schools

You can apply online to change schools at a time other than when your child is due to start infant, junior, primary or secondary school. We call this an in-year application for admission to school.

You can also apply by ringing Call Derbyshire tel: 01629 533190. Or call us for a paper application form (form AF5), tel: 01629 537499.
